New Zealand's own mission history began in pre-colonial times when Maori leaders invited Christian missionaries here. Missionaries had a vision for partnership between indigenous peoples and settlers that would avoid the exploitative history seen in places such as USA and Australia. They were involved in brokering an agreement between Maori and the British Crown and in translating the treaty of Waitangi signed in 1840. Later Government and settler actions broke the trust established and the number of Christian Maori subsequently declined.

By the 1880's NZ was sending its own people to other parts of the world beginning a history of service to the needy and contributing to their holistic well being. That contribution continues to today.

NZ has consistently punched above its weight in world mission and the 2001 edition of Operation World notes "NZ is ranked fourth in the world for missionaries sent out per head of population." Kiwis have been well accepted wherever they have gone bearing the good news of the Gospel. They can be found in almost every country of the world in a wide variety of activities sharing out of their own experience.

Today NZ is host to people from various ethnic backgrounds and they are both receivers and sharers of God's good news which is for all people.
